Each delegation weaves together three core sets of activities: site visits to local organizations, hands-on fieldwork projects, and a human rights training workshop with local youth activists.

Rwanda (Dec 28, 2009 - Jan 11, 2010)

Program Tuition: $1,800

This delegation will explore the roots of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, how this legacy of violence has impacted the country and its people, particularly Rwandan youth, and also how the country is attempting to rebuild today. We will examine issues of truth, justice and reconciliation in the context of post-conflict Rwanda and what is needed to strengthen local institutions and programs dedicated to promoting a culture of respect for human rights. Participants will connect with young Rwandans and get involved in a variety of collaborative projects aimed at promoting human rights as well as meet with leading human rights defenders, government representatives, international institutions, youth and others from local communities to learn more about the political, economic and social challenges faced by Rwandans today.

Application Deadline: September 25, 2009

How to Apply: We invite interested young leaders to apply. We are looking for participants who are between the ages of 18-30 and who possess U.S. citizenship or residency as well as international students studying full-time at a U.S. college or university. Most importantly, applicants should wish to expand their knowledge and understanding of human rights and social justice in a cross cultural context.

For detailed information on program activities, costs, fundraising/financial aid, and application information, please visit: www.globalyouthconnect.org/participate

or contact GYC Rwanda Program Director Jesse Hawkes directly at jesse@globalyouthconnect.org.

Global Youth Connect is an international human rights organization which is building and supporting a community of youth who are actively promoting and protecting human rights, and educating and inspiring the next generation to work for peaceful change. On January 1, 2010, let's recognize and celebrate Globalfamily Day, One Day of Peace and Sharing for all faiths, cultures, races, nationalities and economic classes. During the 48 hours of January 2010, let's break bread together, ring bells, and pledge to find non-violent solutions to all our problems in the year ahead. If you agree, please register here and sign the Globalfamily Harmony Pledge. Then tell your friends, your families, your neighbors, your co-workers, and help us establish this new 21st century tradition that puts true meaning and new pleasure into the words "New Year.” On January 1, at the start of the United Nations Year of the Planet, let's all gather at our electronic hearth and celebrate life on earth together. Let’s replace hate and hunger with peace and sharing, and begin to unite our global family.

How:

On January 1, 2010, Citizens around the world, led by endorsing heads of state and their families will participate in simple 21st century style ceremonies. They will share food and make pledges to work to solve all conflicts in the coming year through non-violent means. The symbolic power of breaking bread is also encouraged on this day. Families can bake bread in their own tradition or ones they may adopt, and share their bread with friends, neighbors and those in need.

At 12 noon on January 1, 2010, all are invited to ring a bell or beat a drum to spread the message of unity throughout the world. Also, during the 48 hours that it is January first somewhere on earth, people everywhere are invited to reach out, through their neighborhoods, communities, and especially through the Internet, to send positive greetings to all other members of our global family.

Thus, at the start of 2010, 10th anniversary of the gathering of Israeli and Palestinian families at a West Bank Refugee Camp to inaugurate Globalfamily Day, we can begin a new, worldwide tradition of peace and sharing. This will be an annual globalfamily reunion that will hopefully continue for the next millennium or two.
