Building Bridges, Networks and Expertise Across Sectors

Dear Friends, I am on the roster of Fulbright Senior Specialists in law. The Fulbright program sponsors Senior Specialists for short term lectures and seminars ranging from two weeks to a month in length. My areas of expertise and interests are best practices in law, dispute resolution, access to justice, and democratization. Senior Specialists are usually invited by their host institutions. Anyone connected with a university who is interested in hosting me is being asked contact me. We can explore the possibility. I will give you more information regarding my qualifications, the application process, and time frames. We can custom-design a course or seminar to fit the needs and interests of the participants. We may hopefully be able to build upon future projects. Thanks, Nancy

United States Agency for International Development and Western Union Launch African Diaspora Business Program

The United States Agency for International Development and Western Union have launched the African Diaspora Marketplace, a business-development program that will support the U.S.-based African diaspora in creating plans for sustainable start-up and established businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa. The program will also provide grant funding to between ten and twenty small and medium businesses with the strongest proposals for boosting economic opportunity and job creation in Sub-Saharan Africa through diaspora-driven development.

The initiative, which includes a research component, is designed to demonstrate the impact that entrepreneurs from the world's diaspora or migrant communities can have on development in their home countries.

Proposals must be implemented in one of the following Sub-Saharan African countries where USAID has both on-the-ground presence and potential technical assistance programs for entrepreneurs: Angola, Burundi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. To participate, candidates must be a member (or members) of the Sub-Saharan African diaspora living in the United States as a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, and must have a local partner in the country of implementation.

A selection committee will review initial proposals and identify qualifying applicants who will be requested to submit a comprehensive business plan for evaluation. Program finalists will be provided with guidance and technical assistance in developing their business plans. The grant selection panel will evaluate final business plans and select grant recipients based on criteria that include the business idea and management framework, prospects for sustainability, capacity to leverage diaspora resources, and results orientation.

Grants will range from $50,000 to $100,000 each.

For complete program information, including the full list of eligibility criteria, visit the African Diaspora Marketplace Web site http://www.diasporamarketplace.org/

Dear Adrehemu, Your suggestion is very interesting. I have received several US AID training awards in the past for eastern Europe and former Soviet countries. Are you involved in applying for this grant? Perhaps we can partner in this separate from the Fulbright program since the Fulbright program is separate.

Dear Adrehemu, My apologies for such a late reply. My work has kept me very busy, but I have not forgotten your request. I contacted the Fulbright office to see if it is possible to work with your country and possibly your NGO. I am able to develop a project in Tanzania. However, a Fulbright opportunity must happen through an institution of higher education. So if you have contact with a 4-year college or university willing to host me for a short time, for a two-week to one-month period, we may be able to establish the first stage of a program of interest to you and your NGO. I can deliver information and hold seminars on U.S. AID proposal writing that seeks funds to develop training and education materials for incubating sustainable start-up businesses and enhancing existing business in the Sub-Sahara. I can also deliver seminars or lectures on other pertinent areas of interest in my field of law. Perhaps this may spark some ideas on your part. Keep in mind that the university connection is critical to for initiating for programming and that you and your contacts there would have to make the inquiry with the U.S. Embassy for me to come. If this is feasible, I will send along instructions for this. Thank you. Nancy

Dear Nancy

Conflict, Peace & Development studies Center at Tribhuvan University (www.cpds-tu.edu.np) can be the organization that can host you as it is the biggest public university in Nepal and we host many Fulbright scholars. Since our program also have a law component so it will be very easy for you to convince the Fulbright to come to work with us.

And my organization Asian Study Center for Peace & Conflict Transformation (ASPECT) in cooperation with Conflict Peace & Development studies Program - Tribhuvan University can hosts several workshop and seminars for you. I can also talk to The Asia Foundation as we are working closely with them on Access to Justice Program. So lets brainstorm, your expertise is very much needed in Nepal. I can send you some of my writings for you to understand Nepal.

Manish
