About NPDS

In the year 2006 a group of hill people came together to form a community based organization for eradicating their problems. They came from different clans, mostly from Mro, Bawm, Tripura, Marma, Khaleng, Chakma, Chak and Lushai. They came together to develop educational and medical facilities and to address the need to move beyond poverty.
The first meeting took place in September 2006, with 28 members from a variety of hilly tribes. The group discussed the need to come together to help each other in the areas of food, shelter, medicine, education and economic development. The group requested the Social Welfare Department of the government of Bangladesh to register them as a nonprofit organization. In January 2009 the Needy People Development Society (NPDS) received registration for the welfare of underprivileged poor people in the Bandarban Hill Districts.
The members of the general body of NPDS are from different areas of Bandarban Hill Districts. Some of them are simple poor farmers, others NGO workers, tribal housewives and even local leaders like Carbaris and Headman. Each of these members of the general body plays a vital role in each of their hill villages. As the Organization does not have any financial donors yet, it is operating its official activities assisted by a group of energetic young men and women, mostly students who wish to contribute to helping their communities struggle for their existence.
