South Asian Media Briefing Workshop on Climate Change

South Asian Media Briefing Workshop on Climate Change

Centre for Science and Environment

New Delhi, India

August 27-28, 2009

Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) invites you to attend a South Asian Media Briefing Workshop in New Delhi to demystify the subject of climate change: its science, impacts, mitigation strategies, politics and global negotiations.

The two-day Workshop is aimed at providing first-hand information on and understanding of the subject to journalists, straight from the key women and men in the field – the national negotiators, policy-makers, climate change experts, and civil society representatives.

Journalists from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will have the unique opportunity to interact with and be briefed by these people.

The Workshop will also offer a chance to meet with editors and other journalists covering the subject in the South Asian region, as well as with CSE’s most recent batch of Media Fellows who have worked on the subject. Additionally, it will provide the framework and guidelines to prepare journalists for the forthcoming global meets on climate change.

Participation procedure

Participation at the Workshop is open to active journalists, including freelancers, from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
There are only 40 seats for the Workshop. Interested journalists can apply through e-mail or fax on the format provided below.
There is no participation / registration fee. CSE offers to support the travel and accommodation of some of the selected participants. But to avail of this sponsorship opportunity, interested journalists must apply immediately.
Selection of the participants will be done by CSE on a first come-first served basis. The cut-off date for receiving applications is July 20, 2009.

Dear Roopak,
You have raised a very pertinent issue.
It is often alleged that we in the media these days are giving too much space too issues like internal bickering in political parties or family feuds of our celebrities while development issues are pushed to the back burner.

But at the same time Roopak, we should also admit that media do play important role in voicing the grievances of the people, particularly during crisis situation.

In the context of India’s northeast as you know despite direct and indirect intimidation from both state and non-state actors, media-- both print and electronic— have been discharging its duties impartially be it in protesting highhandedness of the security agencies of the government or the senseless killings by the insurgent groups.

Similarly, in many developing countries where freedom of expression is not recognized as a fundamental right of the citizens, media are engaged in relentless battle to establish truth and justice.

what is the media doing in developing countries and are we really doing what the society expects us. we are dubbed as 'sentinels of society' and are expected to solve the problems and ventilate the grievances by the power of the pen. can we discuss on this.

Very happy that this group has been initiated. Time to build it into something interesting and powerful. The media must return to its roots of useful communication.
