Profile Information

What motivated you to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
I was part of the first mediation training at Oberlin College and saw great people like Janet Rifkin talk and felt a great affinity and love for the work. I also grew up with a religious background that encourages tolerance and peace as a Sai Baba devotee. And, of course, I saw how badly things went sometimes in the world and thought that there were better ways to heal humanity and our plant, animal, and environmental world.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I was originally trained as a mediator at Oberlin College in 1983, and have been active in the field since that time. My work and training background include: individual, organizational and multi-party interventions; and work around controversial issues like pro-life/pro-choice activism, police accountability, and Native American land claim conflict. My research includes work around incipient and active gang related activities, how worldview and values of practice effect practice work, identity effects on data collection, best practices in environmental and inter-cultural conflict resolution, and combining cutting edge psychological practices and spiritual, somatic, and emotional, as well as cognitive practices, with conflict resolution work.

I jointly founded one campus mediation center, and coordinated two. I was also senior staff for the National Association for Mediation in Education (NAME, now CRENET/ACR) and spent several years as a trainer for the Alternatives to Violence Project in maximum security correctional facilities. I am also certified to do NY State Lemon Law Arbitration and Matrimonial Fee Dispute Arbitration.

I am currently an Assistant Professor of Conflict Analysis and Dispute Resolution at Salisbury University, in Salisbury, MD. I have also taught at Syracuse University and Le Moyne College.

Hi Rachel, it is great to get a response from you. I am pleased to be able to inspire you, and hopefully that will culminate in to a long and sustained friendship, collaboration for peace building and human rights. I really want us to work together with others in building peace and human rights programs that can have far-reaching effects. I have some great ideas for a start, but will throw the ball on your end for you to start the ball rolling. Ha! this is because i may not know which programs are your interest and focus as of now. best wishes and friendship .Andrew

Hi Rachel, I agree with you absolutely, that the road less traveled is often hard and lonely. I am determined to brave it through. In this corner of the world, it is challenging but the many positive results brings hope. And together we will be able to fashion a new world order free from violence, free from hate, free from discrimination, where we all see our selves as human deviod of background, or country. It is a mammoth task, but it takes one step at a time, and this kind of network of peace builders and people passionate about human rights is a refreshing reminder that the future is bright if only we are granted the opportunity. warm wishes and peace from the heart of Freetown, Sierra Leone, Andrew

thanks so very much Rachel for your feedback. The messages gives me hope and add on to my own sense of personal accomplishment as well as a driving force towards peace building and development in Sierra Leone. Through friends like you, i am rejuvenated to take the road less travelled and carry on my commitment at peace building and human rights amongst children and war-scarred youth. www.bgiftedfoundation.cfsites.org
imagine what difference it will make to have a pilot support of your training young leaders in dispute resolution and engage in collaborative peace and development projects in Sierra Leone. it will touch so many lives.
best wishes Andrew

The Global Campaign for Peace Education has two goals: 1) to build public awareness and political support for the introduction of peace education into all spheres of education, and; 2) to promote the education of all teachers to teach for peace
