Profile Information

What motivated you to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
I had teachers who opened my eyes to the potentials of nonviolence. The Vietnam War. My encounter with people like Hakan Wiberg, Johan Galtung, Elise and Kenneth Boulding, etc. Being a young student in Somalia (at war) 1977 to 1981. My education in Yugoslavia from 1974. A lot of reading, peace research and Gandhi in particular.
And the belief that with more research and education at all levels, we can learn to understand conflicts better - and when we do, there will be less "conflict illiteracy" and thus, other tools in the toolbox than a hammer and a chain saws...
Finally, as a conflict 'doctor', I like to combine the idea of alleviating suffering, confronting power nonviolently and suggesting alternatives - pro-peace and not anti-war only...
By the way, in May 2009 I opened an art photography gallery. Welcome to visit - it may have something to do with peace too...

Dear Jan:
Thank you for your request. I am delighted to be in contact with you. I know it is extremely short notice, but I am co-hosting a two day workshop exploring youth violence along with the British Council and Project Exit (part of Fryshuset) at the Fryshuset facility in Stockholm. You would be most welcome to join us at this free event. If you are interested please let me know or contact Project Exit through the Fryshuset website.

Thank you for sharing your photographs. I hope we have a chance to speak about some of your experiences in the very near future.

Best regards,
Jeffrey

Thank you for your friend request. I found that you have been involved in various issues in many countries. I like your idea of art photography gallery. The photos of Burundi remind me of people’s energy in the field. It was not the stereotype image of conflict but remind me of existence of power to peace. I thought that the gallery will be one of ways to reduce ‘conflict illiteracy’. I would like to learn a lot from you.

really, really like your idea of combining photography/art with peaceworkexperience, because most of the time you have that kind of combination when it comes primarily from the art perspective and not from someone coming from the peace work perspective first. thanks!
