For the Love of God: NGOs and Religious Identity in a Violent World - Shawn Flanigan
Examines the ways history and religious identity influences FBOs in Lebanon, Sri Lanka and Bosnia Herzegovina and finds that they often reinforce rather than transcend schisms found in the larger society. Based on over 100 interviews with FBO staffers in these countries, Flanigan reveals the darker, more ambivalent side of altruism.

Building Peace - Craig Zelizer and Robert Rubinstein
The Alliance for Peacebuilding, one of the leading networks in the field, has brought together 13 stories of innovative peacebuilding practices from around the world.

Multi-Track Diplomacy - Louise Diamond
Taking a systemic approach to conflict resolution, this book identifies the players and activities that contribute to the peacemaking and peacebuilding process in a community.

Ritual and Symbol in Peacebuilding - Lisa Schirch
Underscores the importance of incorporating symbolic tools, including ritual, into traditional approaches to conflict.

Reducing Poverty Building Peace - Coralie Bryant and Christina Kappaz
Draws attention to the global nature of poverty and its link to conflict.

Peace Operations Seen From Below - Beatrice Pouligny
Explores the many ways local populations think about and respond to peacekeepers.

Zones of Peace - Landon Hancock and Christopher Mitchell
Examines sanctuary as it relates to historical and modern conflicts from the Philippines to Colombia and Sudan. The authors chart the formation and evolution of these varied "zones of peace" and attempt to arrive at a "theory of sanctuary" that might allow for new and useful peacebuilding strategies.

Peace through Health - Arya, Neil
We typically define and talk about wars using the language of politics, but what happens when you bring in a doctor’s perspective on conflict? Can war be diagnosed like an illness? Can health professionals participate in its mitigation and prevention? The contributors to this book engage with these ground-breaking ideas and describe tools that can further peace once war is understood as a public health problem.

How the Aid Industry Works - Arjan de Haan
Provides a basic description of what aid practices are and how they evolved. The arguments of both proponents and opponents of aid are presented and analyzed, along with real-life examples of projects and programs in context.

Freedom From Want - Ian Smillie
Freedom From Want traces BRAC’s evolution from a small relief operation indistinguishable from hundreds of others, into what is undoubtedly the largest and most variegated social experiment in the developing world.

Transacting Transition - Keith Brown
Scholars and practitioners with first-hand knowledge of foreign assistance programs, recount what happens when democracy goes local, and principles like transparency, gender equality, interethnic tolerance and cooperation, run up against particular realities-political agendas, self-interest and memories of conflict.
