Profile Information

What motivated you to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
The approaches to international development need to adjust to the context. Promoting economic growth, improving democratic governance, and reducing poverty in fragile or failed states, and in post-conflict and post-disaster situations present new challenges facing the world today.

Approaches to peace and conflict resolution within the development context are, thus, becoming important considerations for development policy, planning and management.

I joined this group in the hope of collaborating with others to find better ways to promote synergies between development and peacebuilding.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I am working as an independent consultant focusing on strategic, operational and performance management of international development programs.

My career in international development began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Honduras. Over nearly 30 years working in international development, I have held senior management positions with public and private organizations. Between 2005 and 2007, I managed education programs in Brazil and India, for the American Institutes for Research. At the U.S. Agency for International Development, I directed the Agency’s strategic and performance planning, directed development, economic and political transition and reconstruction programs in Latin America and Eastern Europe, supervised shelter and urban development programs in Central America, and managed cross-national evaluations of USAID programs. I also served as a policy and strategy advisor on the USAID Administrator's Task Forces for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Holding advanced degrees in Regional Planning from Syracuse University’s Maxwell School, as well as Educational Psychology and Statistics from SUNY at Albany, I have played a leadership role in the development of the U.S. government’s strategic planning, project design, and performance measurement policies for programs to address critical economic, governance, and social sector issues. I am fluent in Spanish, and have worked in over 20 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

Lithuania is an interesting place and is developing in an interesting direction. I would be curious to hear your take on it from its early independence days. I missed the time when scholars paid it due attention. Now, it is sort of in the wind in terms of academic attention. Did you have any involvement in the education sector there? C

Hi Joseph,

I have just begun using the arts for conflict resolution; my current goal is to complete a one-woman show about practices that promote life and human development. Right now I am reading a book called Ritual and Symbol in Peacebuilding by Lisa Schrich. It was recommended to me by Craig Zelizer of this site. He also recommended I contact Dena Hawes of this site, who does performance art and peacebuilding.

Right now I am doing an Independent Study as part of my Masters at Tai Sophia on cultural certitudes and assumptions. I am reading a book called Postethnic America and another called the Truth about the Truth (on postmodernism.) I then plan to read a book called Beyond Culture. These will inform me as I create new pieces in my performance.

Have you used the arts for conflict res?

Thanks Joseph! It is pleasure to receive your friendship. Let me share here a voice of reason that may be critical in our shared goal of sustainable development and peace:

What we see in and out
In the experience everyday;
Affluence versus Education,
Technology versus Science;

Modernity versus Tradition,
Autonomy versus Accountability;
Growth versus Equity,
Nation versus Youth Energy;

Energy versus Environment,
Ecology versus Honesty;
All constitute pairs inter-dependent,
Whose equilibrium is crucial to our living.

If one is the Fruit cherished,
The other is its Seed eternal;
Can we harvest that we want
By neglecting the Seeds un-nurtured?

Science denies a perpetual machine
Deriving energy from nowhere;
Can we defy mother Nature
Without being slapped down?

I shall value comments from your experience.
Regards,
Vinay

Hello Joseph, sounds interesting. Who will you be working with here in Tbilisi?

Hi Joseph: Thanks for responding... I had received one or two invitation from folks who apparently blast e-mailed everyone. I have some tenuous relationships with the NYPD and other police departements e.g. served as an auxiliary police for some years and also worked with Community Police Officers in an attempt to encourage them to refer certain kinds of disputes to our mediation center. I may also facilitate a structured group discussion in a Pennsylvania PD. Your own peacemaking career seems extensive and varied. I accepted your invitation, but don't have time right now to write further... am driving into NYC with Labor Day Traffic-- but have company and some DVDs.

Best, Alan

Hello Joseph:

Did you select me for a friend invitation for any special reason or did you ask everyone on this site to be your friend?

Thanks, Alan
