Rape as a weapon of war

Dear all,

I would be honored to hear from anyone who may be able to assist me in collecting research I am doing for a paper on Rape as a Weapon of War. I am looking for a variety of data and research to add to what I have already collected, and I would appreciate any information or resources you may be able to provide me with. I am looking to stress the long term effects of rape as a weapon of war on civil society.

Please feel free to e-mail me directly regarding any data, ideas, papers, links, contacts, or advice you may have. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Cassandra

Hi Jelena,

Thanks so much for the papers, I haven't read them fully yet but the look great and useful. I will most defiantly send you anything interesting I find as well. Feel free to send me an email and maybe we can discuss more about our work. Not sure if you have any of these or not, but here are a few things. Once I put together more of a bibliography I will send it to you if you would like.

Thanks,
Cassandra

Dear Cassandra,

At MPSA in Chicago (April) there is at least one panel you might be interested in:
http://forms.mpsanet.org:8090/Sections.aspx?section=17&session=25
Particularly:
"Redressing War Rape in Bosnia: The Challenge for ICTY. The paper examines rape as a deliberate assault strategy implemented by the Serb troops against the Bosnian Muslims in the war of 1992 – 1995 and looks at the challenges it poses for the International Crime Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. Presenter - Elena Pokalova, Kent State University"

If you can't attend I'm sure you could contact her - I don't know her, but I am on the panel. I did some work on this as well for my MA - an interesting and devastating topic.

Best,

Sarah

Hi Zahra,

Thank you so much for sharing your articles with me. The conference and presentation was a great success and now I am hoping to turn the work into a much longer and more in depth piece/study. I look forward to reading your paper and article, and will get back to you shortly to discuss. I am sure we can find ways of collaboration in the near future.

Best,
Cassandra

Well my trip to Budapest, Hungary was a success! I attended the 7th Annual Conference on Violence and the Contexts of Hostility and presented on the panel on Sex, Sexuality and Violence. Thank all of your for your support and input on the topic. I hope that we can continue the discussion and information sharing.

My paper was, Rape as a Weapon of War: The Long Term Effects on Victims and Society (See link to full paper below). The theme of this conference was on 'Violence, Victims and Others -Understanding violence by understanding the impact it has on its victims.' The paper studies the use of rape as a tool of war, including the short and long term effects it has on the individual, as well as the societal and political future of a country. The paper will looks at the following key questions: Does rape as a tool of war leave a country with less chance of a solid and stable political future? What are the long term effects on the society as a whole? What are the ongoing effects of stigmatizing, victims, including a look into the effects of marriages among victims. This will also entail looking at the inequality and gender discrimination women face in times of war, including social exclusion, and how this symbolic form of violence affects that marginalization in the future and in times of peace. What promotes an individual to use rape as a tool of war, and what are key motivating factors? What function does rape have in modern day warfare, and how does it compare in a historical perspective? The paper concludes with recommendations on for more in depth analysis and studies on primary and secondary victims, as well as the rapist. These recommendations lead into how to work towards a sustainable end to the use of rape as a weapon of war.

Please see the following link to read my full conference paper, but stay tuned as I will be doing a more in depth study and paper to be released for publication in the coming months.

Dear Cassandra,

Warm Greetings from Bujumbura, Burundi !

This is a very interesting and rich subject. As you might have already heard, Burundi has been going through armed conflict for more than 12 years and has just signed its peace agreement with the last armed group (FNL). As in other countries in conflict, women and young girls have suffered a lot from Violences against them , especially from rape as one of the weapons used agains grassroots communities.
