Profile

What motivated you to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
Currently living in Iraq is a strong motive for me to to be involved in peace making. I live in a multi-ethinc and religious city; Kirkuk. I have many reasons motive me to be a peacebuilder; political parties are involved more in destructing relations and infrastructure of my country, religious and tribal systems are not functioning effetive enough to stop the violence, and the weak role of civil society in conflict resolution.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I am involved in peacebuilding and conflict resolution since early 2004 through a series of activities (Training of Trainers, Proffessional Training, workshops, seminars, and others) conducted/sponsered by/with Columbia University Center for International Conflict Resolution (CICR), United Stated Institute of Peace (USIP), ACDI/VOCA, Research Triangle Institute(RTI), and other US based NGOs.
I also play a role in conflict resolution and peacebuilding as a board member of the Civil Society Organization of Iraq (CSOI) through conducting many peace education workshops and training sessions in Kirkuk. Those trainings and workshops meant to involve different levels of community members, including; university instructors, university students, youth, female teachers, professional employees of Kirkuk government offices, and religious and tribal leaders.
Being a board member of CSOI, I had also a chance to assist and support the establishment of Kirkuk Council of Notables (CON); an independant, effective, diverse (ethinc, religious, and gender) group of community leaders. All 23 members of the council have a strong role to play in peacebuilding and conflict resolution through thier respective position in thier communities. The council is now performing well, but also needs some support. CSOI is in contact with many NGOs to find financial support for the CON.
Please list the countries and/or regions in which you have direct and significant expertise
Iraq
What is your current country of residence?
Iraq
What is your current job (and organization) and/or where and what field are you studying?
National staff of Iraqi Community-based Conflict Mitigation Program (ICCM), implemented in Iraq by Relief International - USAID. I am holding the position of: Program Manager of Component Two; Iraqi Peace Network (IPN); a country-wide conflict resolution and peacebuilding network consisted of academics, media professionals, civil society representatives, and local government across Iraq).

Hello! Could we think of joint efforts and cross-border cooperation to work on peace issues and involve youth?

Dear Martine,
I am pleased to recieve the first contact here. Thank you for taking the initiative. I am focusing my efforts on peacebuilding and peace education, mainly in Kirkuk (a governorate north of Iraq) which is known as a city of differences and disputes. I am looking forward to explore ways of linking approaches.

Regards,
Sameer
