Sorry I left out some of your questions:

"... why I did not learn about you and the John Woolman College while I was living in Brattleboro, VT."

As an institution it is only about three years old, descending from a large network that preceded it, from my days with the UN Working Party. It's really just being born -- we Quakers do things slowly, but deliberately.

"... how come you did not get their attention since the work you do is similar to the very mission of SIT?"

They have known about me over the years, but Woolman College is just going public this year. I never made myself irresistable to them before now. Maybe that is changing -- did you read about 'Remembering Peacemaking' at SIT January 9?

"... how many students are attending the John Woolman College?"

We do not have 'faculty' or 'students', we are a vision for a completely non-hierarchical college, very alternative and non-traditional approach. We have only 'Scholars' arranged in three concentric circles, the largest about 300 people, and the inner one about 30. We are a bit based on a former institution called Friends World College, where I worked for awhile in the 1980s.

"... is the college accredited by the state of vermont?"

We don't think accreditation is necessary, nor registration in any jurisdiction, at least not any western or developed country jurisdiction. We are consciously trying to steer clear of the western dollar hegemony because it regularly snuffs out promising new efforts like ours.

Hiya Teferi! Locally I have been somewhat of a recluse, and my activities at SIT have been only occasional over the years. But I have pulled together a handful of events there, such as AVP training, a forum on the middle east, a guest speaker or two, etc., and have known several faculty members. I have been networking globally since I started a UN position in 1996 or so, prior to that I did a lot locally (1991-1997). This year I toured in Bolivia with fellow Quakers and with a fair trade initiative based in Brattleboro. Since this is my town much of my organizing historically has been locally-based, as in running for select board, etc., yet I am sure we know some of the same people. But yeah, I am introspective and somewhat reclusive. Still I recognize your face and your name, and I think we have met somewhere, probably here.

Hi Teferi,

Good to hear from you! Sorry for taking so long to respond. NP's overall objective is to develop a large scale, trained international civilian nonviolent peaceforce that could at a moments notice be sent to a conflict zoneto prevent death and destruction and protect human rights, thus creating the space for local groups to struggle nonviolently, enter into dialogue, and seek peaceful resolution. This year they are working hard to build up this capacity starting to train reserves who can be deployed very quickly when needed. You should check out their new website: www.nonviolentpeaceforce.org or www.npeurope.org and also feel free to contact me with more questions!

Also I would love to know more about your own work with youth and your own experiences in peacebuilding.

I don't really consider myself a conflict transformation practitioner since I have not spend enough time at a given conflict in a given place or what practitioner called conflict Zone. I have primarily work with young people in the US. I have been however trying to figure it out how one can assuage violent conflict in the this conflict-ridden world. I have been looking at Frienship as one possible answer and I been researching about the nature of friendship and why friends feel close to each other and what are the motivating factors for people to be friend to one another. How friends deal with conflict? Do they go for gun or talk when they have incompatible needs or goals?

I have to admit that I don't understand how this site works...seems to have too many tentacles and possible ways of interacting...too much interaction without a clear form can be chaos. So...I myself don't know how to trace the comment that I left...or how to engage meaningfulling ina group discussion on this site.

My work often questions how to use "intimacy" as a strategy of engagement...how the political always has a psychological shadow and that one cannot be overlooked for the other. I developed Foreign Exchanges as a platform for inquiry, training and consultation on how "foreignness" is between people and also within people. Foreign Exchanges developes forms of engagement which accounts for both.

I've strayed...but I'm not sure from what. Tell me more about how you practice?

I get what you are saying..."tell the truth"..read my comment to Linda Johnson.

Perhaps I am missing something in the use of this dialogue format?
