Profile

What motivated you to become involved in peace and conflict resolution?
The fact that I am from the Middle East makes peace a natural aspiration of mine, and conflict the top concern in my everyday living. As soon as I've reached a mature age, I have become actively seeking the aim of stability, development and coexistence, both for private and public motives.
Please feel free to provide a short bio about yourself (no more than 3 paragraphs)
I have received my BA in Political Science and a minor in History from the American Univerisity of Beirut with high distinction. After that, I decided to opt for an MA in International Law and the Settlement of Disputes, which is the ideal mix between the difficult tasks of justice and peace, at the United Nations mandated University for peace in San Jose, Costa Rica. I am currently back in Beirut, my hometown and one of the most breathtaking cities I've ever seen.
Please list the countries and/or regions in which you have direct and significant expertise
1- The Middle East (practical/academic)
2- Latin America (practical/academic)
3- Europe (academic)
What is your current country of residence?
Lebanon
What is your current job (and organization) and/or where and what field are you studying?
I am currently working at the UN economic and social commission for western Asia. I'm looking into participatory human development in post-conflict countries, the role of media actors in public/private partnership, and advocating for the participatory approach in the formulation, implimentation and monitoring of social policies. My main field of interest remains various sub-disciplines of International Law, and I aim to enroll in a graduate LLB programme at the University of Edinburgh in the fall of 2008.
Which are your primary sectoral areas of expertise?

Israel's Syria 'raid' remains a mystery (BBC article)

Israel's Syria 'raid' remains a mystery By Jonathan Marcus BBC diplomatic correspondent Israel has kept up a careful policy of silence over the accusations During the early hours of last Thursday morning, a number of Israeli jets appear to have entered Syrian air-space from the Mediterranean Sea, possibly penetrating deep into the country. Later unidentified drop tanks, which may have contained fuel for the planes, were found on Turkish soil near the Syrian border, indicating perhaps the Israeli… Continue

On the (painful) inclusion of Hamas

So the Peace process between the Israeli and Palestinian authorities seems to be back on track. Smiles are flashed to the camera, hands are warmly shaken, and people like me are once again excited about the prospects of development. Hamas has never been my cup of tea, as I don't believe in the amalgam of religion and politics (religion is made to be practiced at home, in the private sphere), and I don't believe in violence either as a solution. Moreover, intercommunal tensions are going from…

Querida Yara,

Cuidate y saludos cordiales,
Mauricio

Hola Yara,
Cuidate y hablamos,
Mauricio

Hello.

It seems we share some common interests so I wanted to make my introduction. I'm Chris from New Orleans. I'm studying Comparative legal systems at Tulane Law School and am very interested in Human Rights and Mediation and Negotiation. Given our common interests it would be good to start communication so we can refer to each other for advice in the future. Please take a minute to view my page and leave a message if you like.

peace.
